Yang Mi new drama announcement causes fan discontent, Leo Luo update, More BL adaptations

Hi guys, Marcus here and welcome to Chinese
Entertainment Update September 4th 2019 edition. In this edition, four upcoming dramas based
on BL novels and Yang Mi’s new drama causes some fan discontent but first.. And the Winner is Loveis an
upcoming costume drama starring Leo Luo and Yukee Chen.
Since my last update, Leo Luo has updated fans with some production stills. The drama tells the story of a couple played
by Leo Luo and Yukee Chen who set out to retrieve a stolen martial arts manual – The Nine Techniques
of the Lotus God. When they find the perpetrator, played by
Zhou Tingwei, they discover that he has already mastered the nine techniques and bloodshed
ensues. This sounds like a real treat for us wuxia
drama fans. It’s also great news for fans of Leo Luo who
was recently in Princess Silver with Sophie Zhang.
And the Winner is Love is also a mini Ashes of Love supporting cast reunion.
Leo Luo played Run Yu, the eldest prince of the Heaven realm.
Yukee Chen played Liu Ying, a demon princess. And Zhou Tingwei played Qi Yuan, a reaper
with two identities. So the production has already started wrapping
some castmembers which means an official wrap shouldn’t be too far away.
I will keep you guys updated when they release more production stills and announce a premiere
date. Whatever your opinion of boys’ love novels
are, there is not doubt that when done properly, drama adaptations of them can very successful.
Dramas like The Guardian and more recently The Untamed are proof of that.
And because of that, more dramas based on BL novels are in the works.
According to some reports, as many as 59 of them are set to be in production in the near
future. Of course, these dramas will either completely
change the boys’ love premise to a brotherhood, or they will very very subtly imply it.
Or else, they will risk not being able to get it past the censorship board.
Here’s a look at four of them – three have completed filming and are awaiting release
and one of them is supposedly started filming but might be facing some copyright issues. Winter Begoniais an upcoming drama starring Huang Xiaoming
and Andrew Yin. The drama tells the story of a businessman,
played by Huang Xiaoming, and a Peking opera performer, played by Andrew
Yin, as they struggle to preserve the art and city
they love. The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty
is an upcoming Jackie Chan-produced costume drama starring Darren Chen and Fu Meng-po.
Darren Chen stars as a sixth-ranking official while Fu Meng-po stars a member of the Embroidered
Uniform Guards as they work together to solve crimes in the
Ming dynasty. Legend of Youthis an upcoming
republican drama starring Huang Zitao and Jackson Yi.
It tells the story of two youths who, despite coming from different backgrounds, unite as
they join the revolution. Flying Phoenixis an upcoming costume drama and it’s lead actors have not
been officially confirmed yet. The drama is based on a novel of the same
name and tells the story of a crown prince and his regent and how they unify the 12 states
and maintain peace in the kingdom. Apparently, the drama started shooting when
the author of the source novel took to Weibo to say that she didn’t even know that her
novel was being made into a drama series! The two parties are still working it out at
the moment. Recently, there were reports that Jaywalk
Studio is producing a new drama entitled, literally translated as “Granting You Warm
Rays of Dawn”. And it would star their main woman and moneymaker,
Yang Mi. The reaction from a section of fans was surprising
to say the least. They were discontent, not at Yang Mi herself;
but at Jaywalk Studio. Pictures like this have been floating around
Weibo. It says “One, wish Yang Mi well, two, wish
Jaywalk falls” “Jaywalk is unjust and must perish, boycott
Jaywalk produced dramas” “Jaywalk bad production after bad production,
audiences want to vomit after watching them”. Of course in Mandarin it all rhymes and makes
for better slogan chanting but you guys get the idea.
Many fans have also changed their avatars to this, which encourages a boycott of Jaywalk
Studio. This comes as a real surprise to me.
I never thought there was any discontent with Jaywalk Studio from Yang Mi fans.
I always thought that if you were a Yang Mi fan, then you were automatically a Jaywalk
Studio fan, considering that Yang Mi’s a part owner of Jaywalk
and she’s been in so many of their dramas – Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, The Negotiator
and the upcoming Storm Eye are all co-produced by Jaywalk.
So from what I can gather there a couple of things fans aren’t happy about.
One of them is that they don’t like the way that Jaywalk keeps pairing Yang Mi with their
own up and coming talent to the point where it seems like they are riding Yang Mi’s coat tail
to success. This is of course something that Jaywalk has
done on more than one occasion. In 2014’s V Love, they tagged Vin Zhang and
Dilraba among others with Yang Mi and in 2017’s Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms,
they did the same thing Wayne Liu and Daisy Dai.
This is just one of Jaywalk’s ways of exposing their new talents to the world.
Yang Mi has undeniable star power and people will watch her dramas.
At the same time, the new talent get the same exposure and will become stars in
the future, and Jaywalk will keep profitting from them.
Case in point is Dilraba, who became a huge star in her own right.
On one hand, this tactic does seem very commercial – cynics might even say they are using Yang
Mi to promote new artists – but is it really that bad?
Especially when you consider that Yang Mi is probably all too happy to do it to see
her company to grow. Jaywalk Studio is in the business of making
money and if they feel they have found a successful formula for churning out artists then shouldn’t
they just stick to it? In theory yes, but clearly there are fans
who aren’t happy with them. Here are some of them protesting at a recent
Jaywalk Studio event. They held up signs and chanted “Boycott Jaywalk!
Be a good actor!” until security guards came to shut them down.
And the thing is fan opinion matters so much in the entertainment industry so Jaywalk might
have to reassess their tactics. Another thing that fans are dissatisfied with
is the constant reuse of the same supporting cast.
The usual suspects are Wayne Liu, Daisy Dai and Leon Lai to name a few and they have appeared
in many of Jaywalk’s recent productions. This is another one of Jaywalks MOs.
They like to hire their own actors who they know are reliable and they do it all the time
because it works all the time. It’s the old if it ain’t broke don’t fix it
philosophy. So it seems to me like these unhappy fans
have two demands that are mutually exclusive, can’t have one with the other.
One section doesn’t want Yang Mi to be paired with new talent because they feel the new talent
are just riding Yang Mi’s coat tail. And another section doesn’t want Yang Mi to be paired
with old talent because they’re sick of watching them.
Which puts Jaywalk Studio in a tough spot. I know, we’ll just have Yang Mi do a one woman
show, no supporting cast. That way it’ll be all about Yang Mi and no one will have anything
to complain about. On a serious note though, I feel that Yang
Mi and Jaywalk Studio have made some great business decisions in the last few years.
They found something that worked for them and stuck with it.
But as with all other businesses and particularly with the entertainment business, you have
to constantly change. So is it time for Yang Mi and Jaywalk to change
their tactics? Or is this just a non-issue concerning a very
small portion of fans, not enough to cause any big ripples?
Let me know what you think in the comments section below.
Just as a sidenote, Yang Mi has actually done dramas with different production companies
that don’t follow the Jaywalk mold. Her most recent one was Legend of Fuyao with
Linmon Pictures whereas her most recent Jaywalk drama was
The Great Craftsman which wasn’t received very well. So that’s it for today guys but while I have
your attention, I’d like to ask you to visit my crowdfunding page, Patreon,
where for a dollar or more a month, I will give one of you a shoutout and answer your
question at the end of one of my YouTube episodes. You can find the link in the description box
below. This show would not be possible without your
support, whether it is through Patreon or simply by watching, subscribing and liking.
Thank you for watching and I hope to see you all in the next one. Cheers.

  2. Lai Yi is a really, really good actor! If they want to keep tagging him in Yang Mi's dramas that is fine with me! He did a really good job in The Flame's daughter and Legend of Fuyao. He seems to put his whole heart into the roles, his facial expressions and emotions really set the scenes! Amazing actor!💖

  3. Hi marcus 👋😊how are u?

Love yang mi as always no matter what it is I'm still on her side as long as nothing against with moral issues❤❤❤ it's not a big deal anyway if the studio rules like that.😊 besides we only give an opinion what we see and heard… the exact reason can be found within the four corners in their studio… i respect for that❤❤
    Gid bless!❤❤❤

  4. Haha. “One-woman show” had me LOL😂 well I mean, on one side fans wish for cast reunion in dramas and on the other don’t like seeing repeated faces. Can’t please everyone 🤷🏻‍♀️

  5. Hi Marcus, as always, good job. I have one question for you totally unrelated to any dramas but it has been sort of bugging me, here it goes: in the modern dramas, I keep on seeing male cast without socks when they wear shoes, is not wearing socks a thing in China???

  6. i seriously dont like Luo's voice, it makes me wanna give him a cough drop or something and that same HAIR! so annoying! i wish designers chose different hair for this man 😒

  7. About BL dramas… i wish they filmed in America! we are legally gay 24/7 baby! If only gayness could be legal in China smh

  9. Hi Marcus. I saw both Chinese Drama ‘Princess Silver & Legend Of Fuyao’, however, my point of view, Princess Silver is phenomenal than Legend of Fuyao, because Princess Silver has closure in the end, but the ending of ‘Legend Of Fuyao’ is questionable, I’m thinking, what’s their friends doing coz only WUJI & Fuyao together in the END. It could be there is a part 2?

  10. It seem that most company do hire their own casts. You can see that most dramas not only JW have same casts member. I do believe in using fresh ideas and different tactic so audiences doesn’t get bored.

  11. i'm really surprise with the jwalk thing, i love yang mi films and dramas and i keep on watching them also because of their co stars too. nothing is wrong with it and tbh i really love them working together! LOL sounds like jealousy to me haha

  12. New talent in the arts should be nurtured and it’s the actors with some experience that help them grow. That’s just how the entertainment business goes. I also feel like it’s more beneficial for the experienced actors to have a good working relationship with new talent as opposed to a strained one. It’s already a cut throat business why make it needlessly harder. I will say that I am glad I do see my tried and true actors in roles Yang Mi included. I like what I like lol.

  13. I always look at Chinese CDrama actors and tell myself they are far too handsome not to be gay. So I'm all for BL stuff because it has to be accepted. People have to start accepting this it's normal. Much to the woe of all womenkind. Our relationship with actors is virtual so wtf. My rule of thumb is if he's handsome, avoid, he's gay.
From what you say about the anti Jaywalk protests it appears to be initiated by rival studios. If the methodology is successful why don't they adopt it themselves. This is provided the manager's don't abuse their clients/actors.

  14. Yang Mi is phenomenal ♥️♥️♥️ She’s the reason why I started watching C-Drama. I just wait for her dramas and movies to come out. 😂

  15. I actually like Yang mi and the same repeated cast! Only reason why I watch most dramas. As long as the repeated cast play different character and not the same repeated character

  16. I'm totally a Yang Mi fan 💖💖! Frankly, I really like those Jaywalk artists you mentioned and would love to see them rise to be leads on their own. People will always find something to complain about. Rooting for the Jaywalk artists and that they get more films to showcase their skills in. I really want to see Lai Yi as a male lead. He is great and I really want to see him shine in the spot light. 😍

  17. I actually like watching Dilraba and Vengo Gao or Vin Zhang. I have enjoyed all their dramas casted together. But I think male lead for Yang Mi has to be a strong actor like Mark or Ethan.

  18. I will still watch YangMi drama whatever people say. For me nothing wrong with Jay Walk if they have that kind of strategy. ✌

  19. Why BL drama ? Because there are good looking and acting OK for actors but as for Actresses, only few has acting ability and beautiful. They are not same as Yang Mi. Cecelia Liu and princess agent actress.

  20. The way yangmi's fan feel are the same as reba's fan. But the different between reba and yang mi are
Yangmi is the share houlder of JW but reba not
Yangmi are in the industry for long time but reba are new soo she need to work with multi actor to inprove her acting

  21. Early American cinema studios did the same thing for years, then started loaning stars out to stem the steady flow of repetitious discontent. Eventually the great Hollywood studios fell. In some ways studio owned contracts are good as they allow great production value and creative freedom. Upcoming actors are given lessons to widen their capabilities and the ability to do larger roles. However, the studios controlled their lives and actors suffered greatly. I am not saying that Studios in China do this. Just reminiscing. I have only discovered the world of Chinese film thanks to Netflix. I am trying to educate myself thanks to your channel.

  22. I think it’s ridiculous I love the yang mi gang put out the best dramas if it’s not broken don’t fix it yeah happy about bl dramas love them I like the stories it’s different thank u for info

  23. I noticed that a lot of the actor and actresses particularly in the same company as Yang Mi are in her dramas also and are paired up with each other in different dramas. I like them each in their own individual way, so when they keep using the same people and partnering them among the same group, it sort of confuses me. For instance, Dilireba and Vengo Gao in Three Miles and then Dilireba and Vin Zhang in The King's Woman… I like all 3 people but seems weird when you intentionally pair them up differently in another drama. This goes the same for a lot of the other dramas that the actors are in.
I had initially thought that Yang Mi did this on purpose so they can have more exposure. I watched and enjoyed FuYao partly because it was somewhat diff.

  24. I'm curious about pay in Chinese dramas. If Yang Mi gets top billing does she get top pay?
I'm glad that she owns part of her production studio. She isn't just making others money.

  25. If the cast is good and the script is good, then it’s a good combo. If the cast sucks and the script is good, it could be mediocre. If the cast is good, they have 50/50 chance to turn a bad script into a hit drama.

Also for actors, if they are good then they get scripts and good jobs.

  26. I think fans are crazy WTH protesting over something so ridiculous! How do they think Yang Mi got her start probably alongside an experienced actor 🙄🙄 I mean that kind of protesting should be reserved for poor quality dramas this production company has produced some excellent dramas 👍I’m so excited about Leo’s new dramas and he’s going to be the lead which is an extra bonus,he’s an amazing actor his performances are so emotional 😥 I also enjoyed the Demon Princess character will be happy to see them paired together! Can’t wait👍❤️ Also Marcus Thank you for another informative episode on new upcoming dramas👍👍👍👍👍

  27. Hi Marcus. You uploaded yet another gem.
I would be really interested to know about other entertainment companies doing costume dramas. 🧐

  28. I would love another drama of Yangmi and Mark Chao. I have been waiting 😩😩🤧🤧BTW, thanks Marcus for updating us.❤

  29. You know most Chinese people are tired of yang mi and Huang Xiaoming, right?? And there’s a reason for that. When comparing their acting skill with the new actors that are coming in, it’s becomes obvious that theirs are lacking. But they still get more resources than most of these young actors.

And honestly, my opinion of Yang Mi dropped so much after ten miles of peach blossom. She was a major shareholder of the company so it was obvious she knew that the novel they were adapting was plagiarized but she still choose to star in it to make money. Disgusting.

  30. I like Leo Luo,, he is a good actor, i don't mind him being paired with different actresses,,, will be waiting for his film 💖💖💖

  31. Greetings to Marcus fans!

I would like to know what you think of your Red T-shirt?

I would like to see how many likes 👍 they would give

    Thank you!

  32. I like yang mi and her studio, I dont know if this fan are real fan of yang mi or their just act like one. If its strategy of jaywalk so be it. That's not anyone problem, What we care is their good dramas & movies. Hi! Marcus! 🖐 as a fan im just saying my opinion. Thank you to this news update! Love it!

  33. when it comes to bl adaptations and dramas in general, there are way more misses than hits — as most portray it at a 2010 romcom level. so far, there are only two memorable ones for me; the untamed (which wins by a mile) and sotus.

  34. Waiting for wuxia drama title the great master total 48 episodes and the fake princess hopefully to air in Sept as according to YouTube info

  35. To me yang mi is just an okay actress. I don't watch dramas just for her. I didn't even want to watch 10 miles at the beginning because of her.

  36. I dont get what's their problem on yang mi promoting new artists. For me its a good thing. I found binbin and delraba thru yang mi's drama and i become a fan of them not bcoz of yang mi but bcoz of how good they are. 🙄

  37. Just finished last episode 60 drama love and destiny
    Highly recommend to watch
Great drama plot developments, quick interchanges of scenes, spectacular and unique sceneries coupled with loving background But most of all a great cast who managed to bring out the richness, excitement, emotions and true love
Love the great chemistry of jiu chen and ling xi
A memorable drama , the best drama as of this day 8th September 2019
Thanks to each and everyone who one way or another made this drama a success to enable all wuxia drama to enjoy but most of all to love and keep it as memories

  38. I think I get waaaayyy too attached to the characters in these dramas so when I watch them in something else it literally breaks my heart bc I want to watch them forever in the role that I fell in love with smh

  39. People are crazy! That's how you introduce new people! They trippin with Jaywalk Productions… Thats how the industry is!!

  40. I thought Korean Fans was worst enough when it comes to their idol. But Chinese fans also. Let's not forget Yang Mi is has a shares on Jaywalk. She was the Main Builder of her own agency! So for sure she knows everything especially the strategy that they will use! Actually C-drama their storyline was kinda boring and too long. Not only Jaywalk but all of production should be level up. Anyways back to Yang Mi if you are a true fan of her. We should respect support and trust her! I know she know what's best for her. She doesn't complain in anything why do we? Obviously she's fine with it.

  41. Thank you for the regular updates, Marcus. I 💗 Yang Mi, so I will still watch her dramas even though I haven't watch her modern dramas yet as her historical costume dramas usually have higher ratings. I like the other well known actors & actresses from Jay Walk studio like Vengo, Dilraba, Vin Zhang, Wayne Liu, Lai Yi, Daisy Dai. So, personally I don't complain about them being paired with each other or casted together in any drama with Yang Mi or Jay Walk productions. But pairing them with other actors/actresses from other studio/agency will give more variety and exposure for them as well as the audiences.

  42. Hi actually i do really have a question hope u will help, there is a movie that was aired on StarTimes the yr 2016 it’s called A woman in a family of swords men it’s was a nice one bt it’s not on YouTube anymo just wanted to no if it’s possible for me to know the name of the song that was used when the drama starts i mean starting theme song

  43. Those fans are crazy. Hope noone listens to them. Who would complain over such delicious actors and acting!!! It's heaven when they're all there and I hope it continues!!!

  44. I think fans' discontent with Jaywalk stems from the fact that Yang Mi has many rivals now, and up and coming actress seems to be making progress while Yang Mi's dramas are not making much impact. Case in point is Zhao Li Ying's new drama Story of Ming Lan, which is the biggest success of 2019 so far, and Zhao Liying being nominated for Baiyulan Best Actress Award for the role. Baiyulan nomination is a big deal, usually it's very hard to get a nomination. The fact that Zhao Liying has been nominated twice for the award made fans very proud of her. Meanwhile Yang Mi's fans are feeling the pressure

  45. I don’t agree with the discontented fans. I like that Yang Mi is not selfish. She likes to promote new actors and actresses so that they will be ready to take her place in the future. I do not see anything wrong with that. If the series is good I will watch it. If not and even with new cast members, I will not watch it. A company making money makes sense. Stick to what works and change it if it doesn’t.

  46. I enjoy good actors and actors with on-screen chemistry so I have no objection to Yang Mi sharing the screen with new or old talent. Love it! Keep it up.

  47. If an actor or actress are comfortable working with each other and give a good drama to audience then there shud not be any problem. Why such hue and cry about it. I like yang mi as she acts well. Wish to see better dramas with good acting and good storyline

  48. I don't think The Great Craftsman was low rated , perhaps if it would be subbed the story would be different…. How to appreciate a Chinese drama if you don't know the language? I speak for all European fans of Chinese dramas….

  49. Guardian had a horribly written script but good actors. The Untamed had a really good script and two amazing leads but lacked money and expertise in terms of lighting, camera, props and sometimes clothing. They weren’t even done that well, but still were able to be good!

  50. Yangmi fans said no to jaywalk what a silly for me, jaywalk was owned by yangmi then why they did it ? Yang mi of course did that to support her own company and all the benefit will goes to her too

    Why so stupid … lol

  51. Well iVe watched some of the drama under that production and it seems they’d play their part well. As long as the actor’s chemistry is good why changed it. Fan should be open minded on this matter, remember this actor needs this break to survive so I believe this studio is doing what is best to help their talent.

  52. Yang mi is an actress that is versatile but sometimes asan actress you have to choosethe right project. I startd watching cdramas when i watched 10 miles , the role she potrayed is awsome she fits the role with mark chao, one of the best actor ive watched so far for chinese dramas as for yang mi ive lost interest in her other dramas(not mycup of tea). They should pair them again but in modern drama. I think 10 miles is successful not just the storybut the cast as well.
Hoping to see them both again in modern drama. She can loose everything if she doesnt choose the right project for herself.beingan actress is not just about money but you hav take care of your career to stay long in the industry.theres notjing wrong for yang mi to help others but she has to take care of herself first to stay long so that she can help others also on the near future
    Thank you for the update.

  53. Is it a commun practice to use a novel for a movie/serie without the author consent in the movie industry? How can they do this??? I hope she get royalties or be involve in someway. About Jaywalk and Yang Mi I didn"t know anything about their relation but I don't see anything wrong about their tactics. If Yang Mi is all for it it's a win-win all around. Fans can be sometime obsessive LOL I watch 'Legend of Fuyao'. It was ok but somewhat, I felt something was missing. Not from Yang Mi. She was amazing!! Especially when Fuyao's mind was taken over by the darkness. She goes shitbat crazy great acting no doubt.

  54. For anyone who has read the manga called "March third" in webtoons then that series "winter begonia" story kinda sounds familiar right?!? Or is it just me.

  55. i dont care whose actors pairing with my idol yangmi as long as they have good chemistry and good character, she versatile actress, will fans will understand in the near future

  56. fans should be proud of yang mi thatshe is giving a new comer to success in acting world and not being selfish, i give her an applause

  57. LOL I don't think those fans realize that as long as jaywalk in producing these films then they have a say in who acts in it. The production is coming out of their pockets so why would they try to get someone outside their company unless the co-star is someone of equivalent or higher status than yang mi. Remember, if they are getting someone outside their company they would probably have to invest more money into getting the actor. It's a supply and demand. Also take this into another perspective. Most talent agencies that also produce films often stick to their own actors/actress to help them build a reputation and a social standing. It would be stupid of them to hire a talent and leave them to collect dust while they hire someone outside the company to act, especially since they have sign a lot of newbies.

  58. It's business! I don't have any problem with pairing new actors with her at all. The new talents still have to prove themselves to be worthy to work alongside her. Riding her coattails is a start, but their talents will prove if their career will be prosper.
